Doctor Amy Martin... in her own words

Doctor Amy H. Martin, MD - Lifting the log

When I first walked into Crossfit Relentless, I was skeptical. My friend, a devout Xfitter had cajoled me into going with her one morning. "Fine" I thought, not expecting much more than a sweaty gym with uninspiring coaching and a done-that-before workout. Well, I could not have been more wrong.

That was over 12 weeks ago. Since then I have endured the Twelve Pains of Christmas, Hellweek, Painstorm Monday, and I can’t seem to get enough. I have bruises on my legs, a nasty blister on my thumb, calluses on my hands and oh how my muscles ache – and yet, I have never felt more alive in my entire life.

I’ve been exercising all my life – mostly running, some biking, even a smattering of Pilates. Physical activity has always been an important part of my life, not just for maintaining my physical health but also to provide me with a mental soundness and balance. However, over the years, with personal time having to be sacrificed in pursuit of professional goals, my "work-outs" gradually became less enjoyable. They were a means to an end, and I had in the process forgotten about the passion and euphoria that comes when you really challenge yourself physically.

Well, that was before Crossfit (fondly called BC in our household). Since joining, not only has my stamina and core strength improved dramatically, so has my flexibility. The workouts are intense, interesting and at times brutal. But everyday I look forward to coming to the gym, to challenge myself in ways I never have. It’s not just the incredible workouts, it’s the camaraderie, the gritty attitude of the coaches, the knowledge that everyday I’m stronger, healthy and more accomplished than the day before. I know it sounds crazy - it is, crazy and amazing. In my opinion, life is too short not to experience Crossfit Relentless.
