Doctor Renee Cortland, Lifting the Ball

I am a 38 year old mother of two with a very busy life caring for my children and practicing as a busy OB/GYN in Hartford.

Prior to having my 7 year old son and 4 year old daughter I was an avid swimmer and runner. I have been sidelined from running over the past 4 to 5 years because of recurring knee injuries. I have been trying keep up my fitness through spinning classes, body pump classes, multiple work out videos and elliptical training.

At the previous gyms I went to I was one of 30 or 40 people in a class. At home I could motivate for a time, then bore of the same work out video over and over again. I have felt over the last few years that I would get to a certain mediocre level of fitness on my own and have not been able to bring myself to the next level of fitness. Also, like many women I see have held onto the last 10 pounds that stuck around since the birth of my daughter 4 years ago.

In the fall, I watched my sister Brenda join and get very excited about Crossfit training. She talked about it frequently and was more excited about working out than I had seen her in years. Her focus on her fitness and her weight loss was inspiring.

I decided to give Crossfit a try in late November and have been hooked ever since! Merle and Glenn have a very obvious commitment to every member's fitness. They are constantly teaching, pushing, cheering and motivating. They take the time to know each individual's ability and guide each member accordingly. It is also a lot of fun working out with a group of people again. It feels like I am part of a great team and this is very motivating. I am waking up and going to 6 am classes 4-5 times a week.

Although my days are starting an hour earlier, I find my physical and mental energy level is greatly improved. Whether I am working in the office, delivering babies, doing surgery or carrying my daughter to the bathroom in the middle of the night, my stamina has improved tremendously!

Like a lot of women, I have always been wary of working out with a lot of weights. When I came to CrossFit and looked at the amazingly slim, fit, strong bodies of the women that have been doing crossfit for a long time I put those worries aside! Merle and Glenn have both been great teachers to a basic novice with weight training. Both my strength and endurance is improving greatly over the past month. I look forward to seeing what I can do 6 months from now!

When I first walked into Crossfit Relentless, I was skeptical. My friend, a devout Xfitter had cajoled me into going with her one morning. "Fine" I thought, not expecting much more than a sweaty gym with uninspiring coaching and a done-that-before workout. Well, I could not have been more wrong.

That was over 12 weeks ago. Since then I have endured the Twelve Pains of Christmas, Hellweek, Painstorm Monday, and I can’t seem to get enough. I have bruises on my legs, a nasty blister on my thumb, calluses on my hands and oh how my muscles ache – and yet, I have never felt more alive in my entire life.

I’ve been exercising all my life – mostly running, some biking, even a smattering of Pilates. Physical activity has always been an important part of my life, not just for maintaining my physical health but also to provide me with a mental soundness and balance. However, over the years, with personal time having to be sacrificed in pursuit of professional goals, my "work-outs" gradually became less enjoyable. They were a means to an end, and I had in the process forgotten about the passion and euphoria that comes when you really challenge yourself physically.

Well, that was before Crossfit (fondly called BC in our household). Since joining, not only has my stamina and core strength improved dramatically, so has my flexibility. The workouts are intense, interesting and at times brutal. But everyday I look forward to coming to the gym, to challenge myself in ways I never have. It’s not just the incredible workouts, it’s the camaraderie, the gritty attitude of the coaches, the knowledge that everyday I’m stronger, healthy and more accomplished than the day before. I know it sounds crazy - it is, crazy and amazing. In my opinion, life is too short not to experience Crossfit Relentless.

I am 44 years old and a self-employed mother of two. I've considered myself an athlete since high school where I primarily excelled at cross country running and rowing. In my twenties and thirties, I enjoyed rock climbing, snowboarding and mountain biking, but my basic fitness has been always maintained by running. Running is cheap, time efficient and I am decent at it. Over the past five years, I have completed several half and full marathons. I enjoyed the goal setting, but not the hours of training and the abuse on my body. I tried adding Pilates, Spinning, yoga and free weights to "cross train". All of these gave me a new outlet, but none of them addressed my personal fitness goals: weight loss and improve my overall fitness. I would say when I "found" Crossfit I had been on a two-three year "search" for a better, more complete workout.

I joined Crossfit Relentless in November, 2009. My friend bought me and I was immediately "hooked". After one workout, I could see that Crossfit is unique and unlike the typical global gyms. I like that the coaches can explain what elite fitness means with workouts that will quantify my progress. I like that the coaches are invested in my fitness because they want me to succeed; not because I am a number and they want my money. The coaches and the other members cheer for you, push you and help you. Most of all, I like that each time I go I don't know the workout, but I am certain that I will be challenged and worked hard. The coaches told me that if I commit to the workouts and some basic "clean eating" the sky is the limit on achieving my fitness goals. After only two months, I am already elated with my progress: I've lost eleven pounds in nine weeks. I feel awesome! I'm in the best shape of my life since college. Most of all, I am motivated to hit my workouts hard and I can see and feel the results. An unexpected bonus was how Crossfit has helped me in my daily life. I can lift and carry things with greater confidence. I have more energy and I am sleeping better. In addition, it has transformed my running. While I don't run nearly as many miles, I am stronger, faster and my aerobic capacity has increased.

I encourage you to come try Crossfit for yourself. There are lots of really nice people that range in age and physical ability, but we all have a common goal – to get the most out of our workouts and see results. I was a skeptic, but all it took was one workout to convince me that Crossfit was what I was looking for, maybe it will be your answer too.
