Combined class

Saturday at Crossfit Relentless our kids class is comprised of both Crossfit Relentless and Crossfit USA kids. This makes for double the fun and good community building in the box. We also had a new visitor,Whitney, to boot. Our new skill for the day is wall ball. The youth athlete is asked to do a full depth squat with a  4-6 lb medicine ball in their hand and once they fully stand up the throw the medicine ball at a 6,7 or 8 foot target on the wall. Squating and throwing are 2 moves that the body does naturally. They are functional moves. When done inside a workout or satnd alone movement the do wonders for your overall fitness level. todays game was Crossfit Dodgeball(always a favorite). In our version of this game if you are hit with the ball then you must perforn an exercise, usually for 5 or 10 reps. If you catch a thrown ball the thrower has to perform the exercise. Talk about working up a sweat! Here's a few pictures of the fun.

sprints and box steps

At Crossfit Relentless our kids program is about making exercise fun so that kids will develope health habits for life. We use movements that kids love already, running, jumping, climbing and put them in smart, fun, kid appropriate workouts. The structure for todays class included a warm up of running forward, backwards and laterally. The skill we praticed today was pull ups and he workout was sprints and box steps. After that we played Crossfit around the world(backetball). If the athlete made his/her shot then all the spectators perfromed one burpee. If he or she missed the she performed on burpee. I'm not sure if the kids liked the basketball or burpee part more! They actually love burpees! Great class today guy, nice work.

How to make giant Dominoes for a Crossfit kids game

As a subscriber to Crossfit Kids magazine online I get monthly tips, articles, workouts and fun games to play with our Crossfit Relentless kids. This months issue included a game of Dominoes in which you throw a medicine ball at giant foam Dominoes and depending on how many you knock down you can asign a rep/execise component for the players to perform on the Dominoe numbers. The CFK magazine sourced Rogue Fitness as the supplier for the foam they used and I placed a call only to find out that it was a prototype and not in stock for sale. So the Maguiver in me came out and I dragged my kids to Home Depot to scavenge some items to create some. As I sat home piecing this together my wife came up with some details to help make them resemble a Dominoe more so for  2 hours we made the first 2 Dominoes prototypes.

Here is a list of items you will needs to create your own. Cellofoam Poly Panels(14.5 by 48 inches),fine toothed hand saw to cut foam panels,Black Gorilla tape, white paper, black marker, round plastic cup(sippy cup size). Assembly is easy but a little tedious.

First, cut Cellofoam panels in half while still wrapped(best done outside to minimize foam mess). Use Gorilla tape to wrap the panels both for protection of the Dominoe but also to give it the black color. Next, create a bunch of circles on the white paper using the sippy cup and cut them out in the shape of a square.. Next, color the paper black all around the circle. Tape the paper to the Dominoes so that only the white circle is visible.  Depending on the numbers you want on the Dominoes will determine how many circles you need. I've include a few pictures of the items and finished product to give you a visual. Good luck and thanks Crossfit Kids for a great idea!
